About Jeffrey Armstrong
Jeffrey’s first degree was in Psychology followed by one in Literature. He studied the occult and Metaphysical philosophers of all world cultures until the age of 23 when he met his first Guru from India, His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Phabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.
Under his supervision, Jeffrey lived in ashrams as a celibate brahmacharya for 5 years serving a wide variety of ashram services including feeding the poor, teaching at universities, cooking, and leading kirtans. He also helped His Grace translate his book The Bhagavata Purana and other books into English.
In 1973, Jeffrey left the ashram and met his teacher of Vedic Astrology, Jytirvid M.K. Ghandi, from whom he learned the traditional northern style of Vedanga Jyotisha. Since then, Jeffrey has been one of the pioneers of Vedic Astrology in the West specializing in what he calls AyurVedic Astrology. Over the last thirty five years he has counseled and read the charts of thousands of people. Jeffrey also went back to University and got a degree in History &
Comparative Religion from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and in the following years studied Sanskrit, Ayurveda and many of the related historical Vedic texts. With his near photographic memory and speaking eloquence on these topics, he is a treasure house of great spiritual knowledge.
For the last ten years Jeffrey has been teaching the Vedic knowledge full time. He has developed a full curriculum of seminars available in CD format on the Vedic knowledge including: the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, the Bhagavad-gita, the Puranas, the Yoga Sutras, Vedanta, and the Upanishads. He has thousands of students in the West who are learning the Vedic/Hindu Sanatan Dharma. In addition, Jeffrey travels internationally to major universities, ashrams and corporations as well as to yoga and health spa conferences, teaching about the Vedic culture. He is also an award-winning author and mystical poet.
“Poetry stretches language to its very limits
providing us with a glimpse of something beyond discourse,
a taste of transcendence perhaps.” ~ Kavindra
Kavindra has been writing poetry since he was 13 and to date he has a collection of over 1,400 poems on various subjects in many different styles. These particular poems literally “drop down” within a few minutes… he hardly can write as fast as they come out. They usually require noediting other than spelling and are truly a gift from the Divine!
In 1969, after five years at university studying English Literature and Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry, Kavindra was introduced to the Vedic knowledge, the universal wisdom for which his heart truly longed. Initiated into a traditional Vedic lineage, Kavindra spent the next five years as a brahmacharya (monk), serving in his guru’s ashrams while absorbing the wisdom
contained in the sacred scriptures of India. Inspired by this new knowledge his life and his poetry took on an entirely new expression.
His recent book, The Night We First Met - A Mystic Journey is written in the tradition of Tagore, Kalidas, Blake, Mirabai, Rumi, Aurobindo, Shelly, Hafiz, Keats, Tulsidas, and Gibran – all the great romantic and mystic poets whose words touch our souls. Inspired by a forty year journey of
studying the Vedas and the Bhakti and Tantric schools of mystical poetry, Kavindra’s poems reproduce subtle states of spiritual perception with a voice that longs for intimacy with the Divine Beloved. Revealed to him during profound states of meditation, his words are windows into the Divine realms that guide the listener directly into the ecstatic emotional states of spiritual bliss.
- The Night We First Met – A Mystic Journey (VASA Publishing 2006), was a Finalist in the poetry category of the National Indie Excellence Awards 2007
- In 2006, a CD of love songs was released by composer and singer Thomas Barquee using Jeffrey’s lyrics
- And coming this spring, an album of Kavindra’s inspiring mystical poetry, spoken by the author himself, accompanied by the sublime musical compositions of award-winning musician and producer Patrick Bernard
- Kavindra is currently working on a series of six books entitled Love Letters
Jeffrey invites reader’s questions on the great spiritual and intellectual topics in the Bhagavad Gita and other Vedic texts.
